Reason: While wounded, and with the remainder of his squad incapacitated and with significant numbers of enemy close assaulting his position, closed with the enemy to protect his fallen comrades until medical support could arrive. Suffering multiple wounds, Pfc Flare nevertheless defeated the enemy assault with only his pistol and provided emergency medical care to stabilise his comrades while ignoring his own wounds, ensuring their survival, and maintained security over their position until help could arrive.
